John C. Corlette was born John Hubert Christian Corlette on 21 June 1911 and died 9 December 1977. He was an English architect who, in 1949, founded the private English-style boarding school Aiglon College in Switzerland. His legacy is the school that he founded. From his speech in 1973 "We believe that the goal of education is, or should be, the development of the spiritual man, that is of that part of each one of us which, with development and training, is capable of a vision or direct apprehension of the purpose of life, of the true nature of ourselves, of the world in which we live and of such other worlds or states of being as may exist besides. If we are able to achieve such illumination, the business of everyday life and its problems will be taken care of as a by-product, and such physical wealth as we may need for our passage through this life will follow the spiritual wealth which we have worked to achieve." Net proceeds from the sale of this publication will be donated to the John Corlette Scholarship Fund... so far $50 has been donated. The price $8 generates $2.40, 5 pounds creates 1.80 pounds , and 6 Euros generates 2.40 euros for the fund. Learn more at www.JohnCorlette.com

I married a student who attended John Corlette's school. I think my husband didn't really understand everything that happened at the school until he helped edit this collection of Corlette's writings. I think I understand my husband better now after reading this book.

To anyone who is married to a graduate of Aiglon College (particularly from the 1970s and 1960s), this book might provide some insight into why your partner doesn't mind walking in the rain, prefers brown bread over white bread, can sit for hours with other Aiglon graduates on the phone talking about "challenges" and "hardships" and "delayed gratification" ... these people are all amateur philosophers of education, discussing in depth "how to raise a teenager." Apparently Corlette's system worked on them and they wish this book were used to inspire teachers and principals.

Perhaps a good way of selecting a school would be to give this book to a principal and ask if there are any principles in the book that could be applied today. If the answer is "no, there's nothing in here that could work at my school," then find another school.

I'm writing this review because a small group is gathering to remember one of the Aiglon graduates, John Vornle, who commissioned this work, and the best way I know to honor John Vornle's memory is to re-read the words of an educational pioneer whom Vornle respected.
